Sisters always have the best clothes

Even though we live in separate houses, I’ll admit that I still love to raid my sister’s closet in search of something different to wear to that next party, wedding or formal occasion! We’ve all borrowed clothes from our sisters, right?! Let’s be honest – they always have the best clothes. And although we ladies love a new outfit, it can be really expensive to buy something new every time there’s an event coming up. Whether it’s a wedding, a party, a formal dance or just a night out on the town – you can enjoy every occasion with a dress to remember from My Sister’s Closet.

What’s My Sister’s Closet?

Hands up if you’ve experienced that “I have nothing to wear” moment when looking through your cupboard on the daily? Yip! And especially when an event is coming up? Yip!

It’s this exact reason that we’re often looking for a new dress to wear, but then we end up with those gorgeous dresses in our cupboards that we’ve worn maybe once or twice to a wedding or a party and now… they’re lonely. So why not hire instead of buy?

My friend Michelle McCarter saw a gap in the market and decided to approach a small group of friends with her idea to start a dress hire business based on this idea, except the dresses would be donated to the business and each person would receive a percentage of the hire fee every time their dress was hired out to a paying customer. She decided that the business would be called My Sister’s Closet because we’ve all raided our sister’s closet at some point in search of a new outfit to wear. Immediately I thought “brilliant!” so I rummaged through my cupboard and donated a few dresses. Michelle said something that struck a cord with me: “To me this makes so much more sense than having your dress simply hanging in your cupboard being bored to tears and collecting dust.”

So we put our heads together, ate some food and brainstormed a bit. Then we did a photoshoot with some stunning girls who modelled some of the dresses for us; thank you Belami, Donnay, Ingrid, Olga, Cheyenne and Janine! And thank you Bailey Brown from KolourCult who did their beautiful professional make up.

Finally we created a fresh look for the business and TA-DAAAH – the idea came to life and launched officially on the 23rd of June!

So, how does it work?

You agree to donate your dress to the business whereby it becomes the property of My Sister’s Closet. The benefit to you is that each time your dress is hired out to a paying customer you will be paid a predetermined amount, which is a percentage of the hire fee. This fee will be determined by the business after evaluation of the dress.

For example if your percentage is R100 each time your dress is hired out, then if your dress is hired out 10 times in a period of 6 months, you are already looking at R1000 for doing absolutely nothing!

Customers will pay a deposit when hiring out the dress as well as the hire fee. The dress will need to be returned to My Sister’s Closet within a set number of days. Once returned, the dress will be washed or sent to the dry cleaners (depending on the fabric). My Sister’s Closet will look after the dress with care and ensure proper cleaning and maintenance of each dress.
